Young Hermann's tortoise, Testudo hermanni, isolated on white

About Us

Portsmouth Tortoise Rescue Group is run by Bernice Buckingham and a team of trustees and a group of volunteers

We are a nil for profit group, but we are currently applying for charitable status  who depend solely on donations from the public and our members

We are all volunteers, We take in tortoises that need a new home, for many reasons like relocation, life changes

We vet these homes and ensure all the tortoises needs are met before adopting them out,

We advise before and after adoption,

No longer is it thought a tortoise just lives outside, they need insulated warm homes, and heat lamps, access to uvb lights in cases of being kept indoors.

A lot of health issues develop from poor or wrong husbandry, often being informed incorrectly,

They come from hot climates and the uk weather is unpredictable.

Plus, with more predators coming near to houses, they need secure areas

What else do we do,

  • we take in lost tortoise’s leaflet canvass advertise until we find rightful owner
  • we advise chipping for tortoises, with a qualified vet
  • health checks
  • do walks to learn foraging for safe feeds

and much more.
